BOND UNIVERSITY

Head of Bond University’s School of Sustainable Development, Dr George Earl is one of Australia’s most respected authorities in the field of community planning and property management. With over 20 years’ ‘on ground’ experience as a construction economist and property development manager working in the United Kingdom, Australia and the Pacific region, he has a wealth of high-level expertise in developing and managing a wide range of projects exceeding $4 billion in value. He is retained as a sustainability economist by a number of national and international developments groups on projects exceeding US$100 billion.As such, he has brought an intensely practical perspective to his academic career. Dr Earl is a leading exponent of sustainable development that aligns environmental values with economic, physical and social needs and his expertise in this field is evidenced by over $3.6 million worth of research grants funding in-depth studies into the needs of specific demographic groups such as aged care residents, indigenous communities and low income rental housing.

8.30 - 11:30 Workshop B: Taking Development and Delivery Potential to the Next Level: Strategies to Achieve the Intended Outcomes

We all have great intentions when it comes to sustainability, and we take the correct measures to ensure that the project will deliver on it’s expectations. However, we also know that a lot of unpredicted issues arise and there are many challenges to overcome, and unfortunately, sustainability is often the first to be dropped off. In this workshop, Davina will demonstrate how you can ensure sustainable practices and policies are adopted within your existing building, and make certain that sustainability is part of core business decisions. Including:

  • Finding sustainable opportunities in existing developments: What to look for in your building
  • Building a solid business case to move towards sustainability
  • Predicting challenges and opportunities: A step by step approach

Davina Rooney
Sustainability Manager – Commercial and Industrial
STOCKLAND

Davina Rooney is a Sustainability Manager in the Commercial Property Division at Stockland. Her role is to ensure sustainable practices and policies are adopted in Stockland’s new developments, as well as existing portfolio of buildings, and ensure that sustainability is part of core business decision within the division. Davina is a chartered engineer and has extensive experience in sustainability and building consulting with the leading engineering firm Arup. Davina has completed overseas charity work, spending 8 months working in the Indian Himalayas on the construction of a school which won “Best Education Building” and “Best Green Building” (tied) in the World Architecture Awards. Davina is the 2008-9 Vice President on the National Association of Women In Construction NSW Board, an Assessor with the Green Building Council and the NSW Education Committee for the Association of Consulting Engineers.

12.00 - 3:00 Workshop C: Developing a Business Case for Sustainability: A Change Management Approach

It takes much more than the appropriate technology to create a sustainable green environment and organisational culture. Gwenyth will provide an overview of effective strategies for navigating related change management barriers that often act to slow down progress as we strive to integrate sustainability into an existing facility.

This will improve costs over a period of time through higher retention and efficiency. Gwenyth Taylor

ALLENS ARTHUR ROBINSON

Gwenyth has been working in the IT industry for more than 20 years. She has worked in systems design, user acceptance, change management, project management and portfolio management.

She joined Allens Arthur Robinson in February 1989 as User Services Manager and has managed the PMO since 2004.

Prior to this Gwenyth spent 10 years at the Australian Bicentennial Authority organizing the IT required for a large nationwide birthday party.

Gwenyth’s current role is varied, including managing a developing PMO and running major projects. One of these projects is working towards a position in which Allens is carbon neutral

3.30 - 6:30 Workshop D: Improving Whole-of-Life Building Performance for Now and the Future of Your Facility

In order to improve your buildings’ performance, sustainability is central to not just a healthier environment, but to all elements of how your facility operates. In this workshop, your facilitator will outline what sustainability really means, by articulating values and beliefs and translating them into a workable and cost effective practice. Dr Greg Foliente will showcase new technologies models and tools to improve your whole-of-life building performance and reduce your carbon emissions. Walk away with strategies to:

About Your Executive Tutor:

Dr Greg Foliente joined CSIRO in 1995 as a Senior Research Scientist, and is now a Senior Principal Research Scientist. Dr Foliente is a worldleading expert in high performance buildings and infrastructure, taking a performance approach to architecture, engineering and construction. He coordinates an international working commission (CIB W60) on this topic, and is Program Director for the Performance Based Building (PeBBu) network in Australian and APEC countries. Dr Foliente’s team collaborates with industry and government on techniques and tools for managing built facilities and related infrastructure.
